The Theatre of the Underbelly

The Theatre of the Underbelly is an immersive experience situated in a ruined graveyard in Bath. It takes guests on a journey intended to inspire a profound change in those who experience it. The Theatre explores the power of narrative and how architecture can bring about this transformative change. The architecture serves as the backdrop for a story written in the style of a medieval morality play. These allegorical dramas featured an 'everyman' character as they navigate through temptations, fall into chaos, and eventually find redemption through God. In my story, it is the acceptance of our insignificance in the face of the natural world that inspires acceptance and humility in the characters. The Theatre consists of seven 'scenes' in which the characters confront their insignificance when confronted with the power of nature. Although the outcome is fantastical, the themes and research behind it are very real. Despite the Theatre being a curated fabrication, this does not mean it cannot contain a profound narrative or inspire.
